Gail Cameron presented this talk on Nelson Mandela’s Leadership impact at the International Association of Business Communicator’s conference in Toronto.
The Talk explores the duality of African leadership styles – Afrocentric versus Eurocentric (based on a scientific paper by the SA Institute of Management Scientists – by Prof Liz Booysen, with a view to understanding where Nelson Mandela’s leadership style fits – at times it fits snugly into the Afrocentric version and at other times not. The conclusion drawn that his style epitomizes what Albert Koopman called Pragmatic Humanism – much of which is emotionally intelligent leadership. The talk draws on letters Mandela wrote interwoven with Gail’s personal leadership experiences of coaching leaders over the last 30 years. Her book Authentic African Leadership was published in November 2013.
