Audience Analysis

Successful communications rely on an in-depth understanding of a potential audience.  Audits can be conducted on three levels as follows:

Needs Audit

Examine the needs of the listener/s for an inter-personal communication such as basic needs, background, reservations, role, title etc.

Psychological Communication Needs

Includes inter-personal and public communication needs to understand listener motivation and level of sophistication.  Consider primary and secondary needs to understand unsatisfied needs and brain preferences such as analytical/financial orientated listeners think in logical steps, concentrate on detail and work better alone and by hearing and thinking processes, whereas right brain/creative listeners grasp general concepts better and can jump from one idea to another with ease;  are happier in groups;  are more visual and practically orientated.

Public Communication Needs

Analyze the demographics of an audience such as the quantifiable statistical characteristics used to identify and group people. These objective data points—such as age, gender, income, education, and location—help communicators understand exactly who they are engaging.
