The Hidden Score™ of Recovery

What are you asking your body to recover from?

You might be getting 7–8 hours of sleep and still waking up exhausted.

You might be blaming the tiredness on a busy week, a demanding job, your children, deadlines or simply “having too much on your plate.”

But what if the problem isn’t only how much you’re doing?

What if you’re simply not recovering enough for what you’re asking of yourself?

We often treat sleep as the time when we stop working. But sleep is when the body and brain get to work on recovery – supporting physical restoration, memory, emotional processing and our ability to regulate and respond the following day. So, when we consistently cut sleep short, sacrifice it when life gets busy, or go to bed with a mind that is still processing the day’s demands, we aren’t just losing hours of sleep.

We may be reducing our capacity to recover.

And recovery isn’t only about sleep.

Think about everything your body is responding to during the day:

Deadlines. Decisions. Difficult conversations. Constant notifications. Stress. Exercise. Food. Alcohol. Caffeine. Family responsibilities. Mental load.

You may leave work at 5pm, but your nervous system doesn’t necessarily know the work is over.

And this is where recovery becomes a performance conversation.

Because what looks like:

  • poor concentration
  • irritability
  • low energy
  • emotional reactivity
  • difficulty making decisions
  • reduced resilience

may actually have a recovery story underneath it.

Try this: a 5-minute Recovery Check

Instead of asking “How do I sleep better?”, ask yourself:

1. DEMAND
What am I asking my body and brain to carry right now?

2. RECOVERY
Where in my day am I actually allowing myself to recover?

3. WIND-DOWN
Am I giving my brain a transition between doing and resting?

4. HABITS
What might be helping or disrupting my sleep — caffeine, alcohol, screens, food, stress or inconsistent routines?

5. ONE CHANGE
What is one small thing I can change tonight that supports recovery?

You don’t need a perfect sleep routine.

You don’t need to overhaul your life.

Start with one small recovery practice and repeat it consistently.

Because sustainable wellbeing isn’t built through one dramatic decision.

It is built through the small things we do repeatedly.

Your Hidden Score™

We tend to measure what is visible:

Performance. Productivity. Outputs. Results.

But underneath the visible performance is another question:

How much capacity does this person have left to recover?

Your recovery is part of your performance infrastructure.

Sleep isn’t the opposite of productivity.
Recovery is what makes sustainable performance possible.

So tonight, before you ask “How much did I get done today?”, ask yourself:

“What am I asking my body to recover from?”

Because success should never come at the cost of our wellbeing.
